This process was finally undertaken just prior to digital release in 2018.
Wendy Carlos's own site says the tape baking and high-resolution transfers happened years earlier, during work that led to the 2002 CD/DVD release—not for a first-time 2018 effort.

This sentence is contradicted by Wendy Carlos's official website. On her discography page, Carlos explains that while preparing bonus mixes for the 1996 Tron LaserDisc / 2002 DVD era, she discovered the master tapes had become unplayable, then baked each tape and made Hi-D transfers right away. The same page says those transfers then sat for years until Disney decided to release the soundtrack on CD in 2002. Her site's news page likewise says, on December 18, 2001, "we just remastered TRON for Disney" for a CD with a January 29, 2002 in-store date. So the tape-baking process was not "finally undertaken" just before a 2018 digital release; it had already been done well before the 2002 remaster/CD release.
