Now the Security Council was convened, for the first time, on a danger that no country built and none can contain alone.
This was not the UN Security Council’s first AI-focused convening. Official UN records show the Council had already held AI briefings in 2023 and 2025.
Full reasoning
UN records contradict the phrase “for the first time.”
- The UN Security Council already held an AI-focused meeting on 25 September 2025 under the agenda item “Artificial intelligence and international peace and security.”
- An official UN concept note for that 2025 meeting states that the Security Council had already convened two open briefings on artificial intelligence since 2023.
- The UN’s 2023 press materials described that 2023 session as the first-ever Security Council debate on AI.
So the September 2026 meeting Bengio is discussing was not the first time the Security Council was convened on AI-related danger.
