This sentence overstates who knew the bed's secret. In Odyssey Book 23, after Odysseus describes the bed built around the olive tree, Penelope explicitly says the bed's tokens had been seen not only by "thee and me alone" but also by "one single handmaid, the daughter of Actor," whom her father had given her before her marriage. So the secret was shared by three people in the poem, not just Penelope and Odysseus.
