- This was not the first commercial Bessemer steel production. Histories of the process credit Göran Fredrik Göransson in Sweden with the first successful commercial quantities, while Bessemer's Sheffield works were still using an intermediate remelting method in 1858–59.
- The comparison is misdescribed. Basic oxygen steelmaking improved the Bessemer process by using pure oxygen instead of air; the Bessemer process already removed carbon by blowing air through molten iron, not by adding “oxygen-carrying substances.”
