  • This overstates Maslow’s theory. Maslow explicitly said needs are not an all-or-none ladder: people can be partially unsatisfied at lower levels while still pursuing higher needs.
  • This is too absolute for Maslow’s theory. Maslow said people can pursue other motives even when safety is not fully secured, and he specifically noted that curiosity may be pursued at great cost to safety.
  • This conflates different ideas in Maslow’s later work. Later accounts of Maslow’s revised hierarchy describe the added level as self-transcendence; metamotivation is the kind of motivation operating at higher levels, not a separate rung in the hierarchy.
  • Maslow did not classify acquiring a partner as a self-actualization need. In his original hierarchy, seeking a sweetheart, wife, or other affectionate bond belongs to love/belonging needs.

  • This gets the standard recommendation wrong. WHO recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, not only below five months.
  • This overstates the orphanhood figure. The 10.5 million number was for children who lost a parent or caregiver; a JAMA Pediatrics summary put the orphanhood figure at 7.5 million.
